Sammich Saturday: Monte Cristo

07/07/12 | Pork, Sandwiches, Turkey

I am grateful for any extra day off from work, but it was rough having the 4th of July holiday fall on a Wednesday this year. As someone pointed out on Facebook…it resulted in the feeling that this week had TWO Mondays. And folks, that is just not acceptable. I found myself driving to work on Thursday, and actually thinking of things I would need to do on a Monday morning. That is craziness right there. However, it did help that Friday came soon after the second Monday, and now it is Saturday morning, and I am a-ok with that.
While last weekend’s girl’s night to see Magic Mike will likely never be topped (I am still drooling), we did have another girl’s night last night, and I have to say I could get used to these! A few of us went to T’s house, she cooked dinner, we had some wine, we watched Dear John (see a theme, here?) and we a giggling, crying, girlie good time! I love my friends!
What I also love, are sammiches. Shocker, I know. And the sammich I am sharing with you has only a few ingredients, but is packed with flavor. And it’s simple flavor, at that. Not a lot of spices or complex flavors, just butter, meat and cheese.  But, the light batter on the outside crisps up nicely and highlights, the softer, creamier contents inside. Reminiscent of a grilled cheese, the Monte Cristo is just a little “fancier”.

Ingredients
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup whole milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 slices bread
  • Butter for bread
  • 4 slices turkey
  • 4 slices baked ham
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 2 tablespoons butter, or as much as needed for frying
  • Confectioners’ sugar for dusting

Preparation

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, salt, and pepper.
  2. Butter both sides of each slice of bread.
Place 2 slices of ham, turkey and cheese on two slices of bread. Top with the remaining two slices of bread, to form two sandwiches.
  3. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat, and melt the butter.
  4. Dip each sandwich into the egg mixture, allowing the excess to drip back into the bowl.
Place in the hot skillet and cook for about 3 minutes per side, or until both sides are golden brown.
  5. Cut sandwiches in half, diagonally, sprinkle with confectioners’ sugar, and serve with your favorite jam and/or mustard. I used raspberry jam and chardonnay dijon mustard and both were phenomenal (even mixed) with the sammich!!!
