Sweet Musings: September/October 2018

October 31, 2018 by Jaida Leave a Comment

Happy Halloween, friends!! It’s been a typically busy last couple of months, so I’ll do my best to re-cap what’s been going on.

One of my bestie’s turned 40 at the end of September and a group of us went out for a really nice dinner. 10 courses, with drink pairings. It was amazing. The restaurant only seats 12 – by reservation only, and can be a mixture of groups, or one large group like ours. And did I mention it’s in a train boxcar?!? It was seriously an awesome and unique experience.

The menu for the evening was this:

TOMATILLO SORBET, LEMON OIL

SALSA MACHA BUTTER, SOURDOUGH

HOUSE MADE RICOTTA, WHEAT CRACKER, SALSA VERDE

CARROT, CAULIFLOWER BARBACOA, AVOCADO

CORN PUDDING, EGG ESPUMA, SMOKED SALT

TROUT, MAIZ, CHILEATOLE

VANILLA, DUCK, PICKLED APPLE

BEEF RIBEYE, CHILE PASADO

INTERMEZZO

DESSERT: PEACHES AND CREAM

And. Um. The dessert…Looked just like a real peach, but NOPE!! The shell was made of cocoa butter and the inside was creamy deliciousness. So very impressive!!! A great way to celebrate one of my favorite people in the world!!

Aside from that amazing dinner, it’s been kind of business as usual. Of course, fall finally arrived and that’s been a nice change of pace. Baby girl is growing up more and more every day. She’s talking SO much and is just so stinkin’ smart it’s scary. She’s 2 going on 14, I’m afraid. That scrunchy face of hers though…I hope that phase lasts a long time, because that’s a whole lot of cuteness right there!

We also went to a little friend’s birthday party that had a pumpkin patch on the grounds, and a little train! Little miss really liked running around out there!

I didn’t get to participate in Halloween Treats Week this year, and I had the best of intentions to do a week of posts separate from that with the treats I had planned to make, but….best of intentions and all that jazz – I just didn’t get it done. But you know what, that’s ok! I’m sorry to have missed sharing with you all, but I have ideas already lined up for next year, so that’s a plus! And thankfully I have a couple of other events coming up that I am participating in. Holiday Side Dish Week in November, and Christmas Sweets Week in December – Hooray!!! I’m excited to share some amazing recipes with you!

Speaking of Halloween…I feel sort of like a slacker mommy. Since we will be out of town the weekend before Halloween and I hear that’s when the trick or treating takes place these days, I hadn’t really made an effort to get my kid’s costume together. I mean, she’s two. She has NO idea what trick-or-treating is, so…I”m not really depriving her of anything. Right? Also…candy. While we do let her have sweets and occasional candy (as does her daycare), I”m not trying to have a two year old who is obsessed with it, or throwing tantrums because she can’t eat all the candy. Know what I mean??

The plan was for her to be a fairy, because she got some adorable fairy wings for her birthday. All I need are some tights, a leotard, and some suitable shoes. Thankfully, these were items that were easy to obtain on short notice, and I had her costume all together before we went to the beach last weekend. We had a good time relaxing at J’s sister’s beach house. He went on a guided fishing trip, we grilled every night, went to the beach and took the kids to a trunk or treat event. Nat wasn’t quite sure what was going on, but she liked getting candy. And sitting in a fire truck!!

We probably won’t get to take her trick-or-treating, because we get home kinda late and live in the boonies, so getting back to town plus figuring out dinner and bedtime – and it’s supposed to be raining on top of all that. So…I think the trunk or treat was a good intro for her, and hopefully next year we can actually take her out, door-to-door. I hope you all have a safe Halloween, whatever your plans are!
