Grinch Snack Mix is a tasty ode to a Christmas classic. Crunchy, sweet and salty, with a hint of green like our favorite Christmas rogue!
How the Grinch Stole Christmas has been my favorite Christmas movie for as long as I can remember. As much as I love Christmas, I’ve never gotten into Christmas movies (unless you count Hallmark and Lifetime cheeseball Christmas movies – because I am alllll about those!) But the Grinch…I will watch it every. single. year.
A couple of years ago, when Nat was 2 and I was trying to finally start some Christmas traditions for our little family, I decided that on Christmas Eve I would make us a family goodie basket. In it were a set of mugs, hot cocoa and apple cider packets, the Grinch movie, new PJ’s aaaand… Grinch snack mix to go along with the movie!
While my then-two-year-old didn’t have the attention span for even this short movie, she did love all the other contents of that family Christmas Eve basket, mose especially the Grinch Snack Mix! And, since it wasn’t a big success the first year, we tried again last year and she watched most all of the movie! Let’s see if the third time’s a charm and we get through all 45 minutes this year!
What it takes to make Grinch Snack Mix
Popped Popcorn (lightly buttered and salted is fine, or plain!)
Cinnamon Chex Cereal
White Chocolate Chips
Shortening
Green Food Coloring
Red & Green M&M’s
Salted Peanuts
Pretzels (I used goldfish pretzels…ha)
The great thing about this Grinch Snack Mix, is that it’s really quite simple to make. The hardest part is waiting for the melted chocolate to set – and even that doesn’t take very long. So,you can mix this up about half an hour before it’s movie time, and then sit back and enjoy all the Grinchy goodness!
How to make Grinch Snack Mix
Step 1
In a large bowl, combine the popcorn and chex cereal. Set aside.
Step 2
In a small, microwave-safe bowl combine the white chocolate chips and shortening. Microwave on high for 30 seconds. Stir and heat an additional 15 seconds, if needed, and stir until smooth. Stir in green food coloring – enough to make the chocolate dark green.
Step 3
Pour the chocolate over the popcorn and chex and gently stir or toss to coat. Set aside (or in the fridge) and allow the chocolate to set for 10-15 minutes.
Step 4
Once set, add the M&M’s, peanuts, and pretzels and stir or toss to mix well. Then you’re ready to serve (i.e. EAT IT ALL!)

This is a great recipe. We loved all the different items in it! However, be aware that too much food coloring can change the consistency of the chocolate. If your chocolate gets too thick by adding too much food coloring, just add 2-3 tbsp of shortening to thin it out and it should coat the corn and cereal.
