Tahini (Sesame Paste)

February 6, 2014 by Jaida Leave a Comment

I buy hummus at the grocery store pretty regularly, and J and I have been discussing for awhile how I should just start making it instead of buying it. I’ve thought about it in the past but have always had a hard time finding tahini at my grocery store. Well, instead of trying to traipse all over town trying to find it, I decided that it just might be easier to make it myself (all homemade, y’all!!) and be done with it. When I started searching around for recipes and discovered that it consisted of only TWO ingredients, I felt pretty silly for waiting this long.

Tahini

I mean, all I need to to do was toast some sesame seeds and toss them in the food processor with some olive oil, and voila! Tahini! And since I made the tahini, check back tomorrow to see the first of the homemade hummus that it was made for! Oh, and don’t buy tahini at the grocery store…ever again. This is just too easy (and inexpensive!) to make at home to be spending God-only-knows-what for the pre-made stuff at the grocery store.

Homemade Tahini
As seen on a Nomad’s Dream
Ingredients
  • 1 cup sesame seeds
  • 2 tbsp – 1/2 cup olive oil

Preparation

  1. Place sesame seeds in a dry pan and toast on low heat for 10 minutes. Stir often and watch carefully – you don’t need much color. Let seeds cool after toasting.
  2. Place sesame seeds and 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a food processor and process until smooth. Scrape down the sides as needed and add more olive oil for desired consistency.
  3. Keep refrigerated.

Of course I have desserts, less healthy and more time-intensive meals as well (everything in moderation!), but all-in-all, you can count on weeknight friendly options, all made with love and dished up with a side of life, love, and family!
