Ingredients

For the cookies

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp almond extract
  • 1 egg
  • 2 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda

For the frosting

  • 1 cups unsalted butter, room temp
  • 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 4- 6 drops yellow food color (more or less to your color preference)

For decorations

  • Candy orange slices
  • Black decorating icing or black jimmies sprinkles
  • Yellow decorating icing
  • #4 decorating tip* (small round opening)

Instructions

For the cookies

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  • Beat together butter and sugar on low speed until fluffy. Stir in extracts and egg, mix well.
  • Stir in flour and baking soda.
  • Drop heaping tablespoon's onto foil-lined baking sheet about 2 inches apart. Flatten slightly with fingers or spatula, Bake 9-11 minutes until just set.
  • Remove to cooling rack, and cool completely before decorating.

For the frosting

  • Beat butter on medium-high speed until pale and creamy.
  • Reduce speed to medium. Add powdered sugar 1/2 cup at a time, beating well after each addition.
  • Add salt, vanilla and food coloring and beat until frosting is smooth and color is evenly distributed.
  • Generously frost cookies, and decorate!

To decorate

  • Cut orange slices to make beak and feet (24 beaks, 48 feet)
  • Use a piping tip and black decorating icing, or black jimmies sprinkles to make slit shaped eyes.
  • Use piping tip and yellow decorating icing to draw wings and feathers on top of head. Wings are essentially these shapes (greater than/less than symbols): > < and I just did three little lines for the head feathers. You can customize however you like!

Notes

*the tubes of decorating icing will fit a screw-on plastic decorating tip - I would recommend using these if possible, as it is much easier than messing with piping bags and metal tips for just the little bit you need for these cookies :)
