For the frosting
Beat butter on medium-high speed until pale and creamy.
Reduce speed to medium. Add powdered sugar 1/2 cup at a time, beating well after each addition.
Add salt, vanilla and food coloring and beat until frosting is smooth and color is evenly distributed.
Generously frost cookies, and decorate!
To decorate
Cut orange slices to make beak and feet (24 beaks, 48 feet)
Use a piping tip and black decorating icing, or black jimmies sprinkles to make slit shaped eyes.
Use piping tip and yellow decorating icing to draw wings and feathers on top of head. Wings are essentially these shapes (greater than/less than symbols): > < and I just did three little lines for the head feathers. You can customize however you like!
Notes
*the tubes of decorating icing will fit a screw-on plastic decorating tip - I would recommend using these if possible, as it is much easier than messing with piping bags and metal tips for just the little bit you need for these cookies :)
