It’s time for the weekly menu plan! But first I have to tell you about my Friday night. My parents came to visit, which we always love. But not only did they come to see us and their grandbaby, but my mom – who is amazing – made me an amazing butcher block island for my kitchen.
You see, my kitchen is a bit odd in the fact that it has a lot of open space, but very little counter and cabinet space. Like, I had more counter space in my one bedroom apartment before we bought this house. We had to buy a pantry and another piece of furniture with shelves and a cabinet because the space was so minimal.
J had been talking about making or getting an island for me, which my mama didn’t know about, and she came across a butcher block at a trade fair and offered to make one for me.
Let me just tell you all how not inexpensive they are if you buy them at a store. And J just doesn’t have time to make one. So this was a very welcome and appreciated gift. And she used pieces of wood for the base shelf that came from my grandpa, who passed away before I was born. So, not only did she make it for me, but she included sentimental pieces to make it extra special. I told you that my mama is amazing. And so skilled and crafty.
I’ll have to post a picture of it tomorrow – one that is better than the cell phone shots I took last night. It’s going to take some getting used to – both having an island in my kitchen and actually using it. After five years, I’ve grown accustomed to working with what I have, so I’ll have to learn to utilize my new extra space. I did use it today to chop some shallots, so maybe it won’t be so hard to get used to after all!
It’s the little things, y’all, that make this cooking mama happy. And I have some great things on the menu to cook this week that will give me plenty of opportunity to use my new butcher block!
